Review Text

  • By Mr. Geoffrey E. Goodman on 12 September 2017

This is a great gripping story involving a family escaping from the Nazis in WW2 - the author found herself alone moving from one safe house to another.

    A wonderful book

Why does God allow this woman to live when so many others of her race perished during the holocaust? Nobody knows. But the author's story is fast and gripping. She really conveys the awful circumstances that people who were on the run had to endure. I would certainly recommend this book.

To have a detailed record of a young Jewish survivor of the Holocaust who was not arrested, but went into hiding, helped by brave Dutch people who gave Johanna refuge, is a remarkable story. Quite often when reading a good book, there are numerous events as you read through their story that will amaze the reader. This is so with "Selected to Live". However, the most remarkable event is saved for the end, years after World War Two ended, when a French woman on holiday in a remote island off Scotland's west coast purchased Johanna's book in one of its early forms. What happened next is simply Divine - a God inspired moment of discovery. I cried - in wonder and praise. David Hamshire
